I have spent years watching dogs of every size and personality come through my kennel doors. One thing I know for certain is that a bored dog will find a way to tell you. Here are six signs to watch for as November days get shorter and walks get chillier.
- Destructive chewing. Shoes, cushions and table legs are not snacks, but they sure are tempting to a dog with energy to burn. Offer puzzle feeders or a sturdy chew toy instead.
- Nonstop barking. If your pup is chatting with the whole street, they may simply want a job. A quick game of fetch or a short training session works wonders.
- Digging. Whether it is the garden or the carpet, digging signals pent-up energy. Try a designated dig box or a long sniffing walk.
- Shadowing you. A dog who follows you from room to room is hoping you have a plan. Schedule a few short play sessions throughout the day.
- Constant licking. Repetitive paw licking can be a boredom habit. More exercise and fresh toys often help, but check with your vet if it continues.
- Pacing and sighing. A dog who circles the living room and sighs dramatically is asking for engagement. Rotate toys weekly so old favourites feel brand new.
The good news is that boredom is one of the easiest problems to fix. Ten minutes of nose work or a new walking route can transform your dog’s mood. If your furry friend is still showing signs of boredom, consider dropping them off for a day at a reputable kennel that offers doggy daycare. They’ll go home happy and pleasantly tired.
Even on a snowy Huron County afternoon, a homemade snuffle mat or a game of hide and seek can work magic. A busy dog is a happy dog, and a happy dog makes for a happy home.
