7 Holiday Party Trends to Try This Season

The holidays are getting a little more creative—and a lot more fun.

As a party professional, I’ve noticed that holiday entertaining is moving away from the idea that everything has to be perfectly coordinated, traditional, and Pinterest-perfect. Today’s hosts are looking for ways to make celebrations feel more personal, interactive, and memorable.

Whether you’re hosting a neighborhood get-together, a family Christmas party, a girls’ night, or a festive gathering with friends, here are seven holiday party trends I expect to see everywhere this season.

1. Interactive Parties Are In

People don’t just want to attend a party anymore—they want something to do. Interactive stations are a great way to keep guests engaged and give them something memorable to take home. Think DIY ornament bars, charm stations, wreath-making, cookie decorating, personalized stocking stations, or even a build-your-own holiday cocktail or mocktail bar.

The best part? These activities naturally create conversation and give guests an experience rather than simply another evening of eating and mingling.

2. Statement Decor Over More Decor

You don’t have to decorate every corner of your home to make a big impression. Instead, we’re seeing hosts focus on one or two major visual moments. A dramatic balloon installation, a beautiful Christmas tree, an oversized floral arrangement, a gorgeous tablescape, or a festive photo backdrop can completely transform a space.

My party-planning rule is simple: Choose your WOW moment and build around it.

A few intentional details usually have a bigger impact than filling the room with decorations.

3. Unexpected Holiday Color Palettes

Traditional red and green will always have a place at Christmas—but holiday parties are becoming much more colorful.

This year, expect to see unexpected combinations like pink and red, icy blue and silver, emerald and champagne, lavender and gold, or even bright jewel tones mixed with traditional Christmas colors.

Don’t be afraid to put your own personality into your holiday decor. Your Christmas party doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s.

4. The Rise of the Mocktail Bar

Holiday drinks are getting a makeover—and not everyone wants alcohol.

Mocktail bars are becoming a fun addition to both adult and family celebrations. Set up a beautiful drink station with sparkling water, juices, flavored syrups, fresh fruit, herbs, fun garnishes, and festive glassware.

For an extra-special touch, give your drinks clever holiday names and let guests create their own signature beverage.

And don’t forget the kids! A fancy drink in a fun glass can make them feel just as included in the celebration.

5. Personalized Details

The little things matter. Personalization is becoming one of the easiest ways to make a holiday gathering feel special. Think custom drink tags, personalized ornaments, monogrammed stockings, handwritten place cards, custom cups, or even a small favor chosen specifically for each guest. You don’t have to personalize everything. Pick one detail and make it meaningful. It tells your guests, “I thought about you when I planned this.”

6. Experiences Over Things

One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing in entertaining is a move toward experiences. Instead of simply giving guests another party favor to take home, hosts are creating opportunities to make memories together.

Maybe everyone paints an ornament, creates a holiday craft, decorates cookies, takes a family photo, makes a personalized keepsake, or participates in a silly holiday competition. The goal isn’t necessarily to create something perfect. It’s to give people a moment they’ll remember.

7. Maximalist Holiday Magic

And finally… more is more!

We’re seeing a lot of people embrace the fun, nostalgic, over-the-top side of the holidays. Think twinkle lights, oversized ornaments, bows, glitter, metallics, candy-inspired decor, whimsical characters, disco balls, colorful trees, and lots of sparkle.

The holidays are one time of year when you really don’t have to hold back. If you love traditional Christmas, go all in. If you love pink Christmas, go for it. If you want a disco-ball Christmas tree surrounded by glittering ornaments, I fully support it. Your holiday party should look and feel like you.

The Real Trend: Making It Personal

If there is one trend I hope never goes away, it’s this: parties should be fun. You don’t need a huge budget, a professionally styled home, or a perfectly curated tablescape to throw a great holiday party. What guests remember most is how they felt. Give them something delicious to eat. Put on great music. Add a little sparkle. Give them something fun to do. And, most importantly, enjoy your own party.

Because the best holiday celebrations aren’t the ones that look perfect. They’re the ones people don’t want to leave.
