Behind a Fisher Hill Tudor in Brookline, a bluestone terrace steps down to the pool. At its far end sits the room the landscape was waiting for: a black StruXure louvered pergola over the outdoor kitchen and dining table.
Designed with MDLA, the pergola was conceived as part of the garden rather than an addition to it. Slim columns and a clean-lined frame stay quiet against the clipped hedges and the slate roof, and the louvers do the work. Open them and dappled light moves across the table. Close them and the terrace is shaded and shielded from rain. Wind and rain sensors adjust the roof automatically, and the system also runs from a remote or an app.

Comfort is built in. Infratech linear infrared heaters, custom-finished in black to match the frame, stretch the season into cool New England evenings. Ceiling fans move air on humid afternoons, and integrated LED lighting turns the grill, dining table and pool deck into an after-dark destination.
Much of the craft is invisible. Boston Pergolas coordinated footings, power and clearances with Brookes & Hill Custom and RP Marzilli Landscape so the posts land cleanly in the bluestone and the finished structure reads as part of the terrace.
