There’s something beautiful about fall. The leaves change colors, the air gets cooler, and before we know it, another year is coming to an end.
As the trees begin to shed their leaves and prepare for winter, I think there’s a lesson we can take from this season. Sometimes, we need to let go of what’s holding us back to make room for something better.
And that includes our finances. Think about the beginning of this year. Did you set any financial goals for yourself or your family? Maybe you wanted to get better at saving, pay down debt, prepare for retirement, buy your first home, or simply feel more confident about where you stand financially. How many of those goals have you accomplished? And how many have you been putting off?
Life gets busy. Between work, family, and everyday responsibilities, it’s easy to tell ourselves, “I’ll get to it eventually,” or “I’ll start next year.”
But here’s something I’ve learned over the years: The perfect time rarely comes. Sometimes, we just have to make the time.
One of the things I often hear when meeting with individuals and families is, “I wish I had done this sooner.” And I understand. Talking about money isn’t always easy. Sometimes we’re afraid of what we’ll discover. Sometimes we think we don’t make enough, haven’t saved enough, or are too far behind to even begin.
But financial planning isn’t about having everything figured out before asking for help. It’s about understanding where you are today, identifying where you want to go, and taking steps to get there. You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to start the conversation.
As we transition from fall into winter, I encourage you to take a little time to reflect. What financial goals have you been carrying from one year to the next? What worries or uncertainties have kept you from moving forward? And what would it feel like to finally do something about them?
Maybe it’s time to let go of the fear, the procrastination, or the belief that you’re not ready. Maybe it’s time to sit down with someone who can help you organize your thoughts, understand your options, and create a plan that makes sense for you and your family.
We can’t change yesterday, but we can certainly make different decisions today that may lead to a better tomorrow.
And while the trees may look bare during winter, we know that spring is coming. Beneath the surface, there’s preparation for new growth. Our financial journeys can be the same way. Progress doesn’t always happen overnight, and sometimes the most important steps are the ones nobody sees.
So, before another year passes, ask yourself: What’s one financial goal I’ve been putting off that I’m finally ready to work toward? You don’t have to wait until January 1st to make a fresh start. Sometimes, the best time for a new beginning is right now.
Here’s to letting go of what’s behind us, making the most of today, and looking forward to a brighter year ahead.
