When people talk about artificial intelligence (AI) taking jobs, they usually picture computers replacing office workers. But could AI take your plumber, too?
Relax. A robot isn’t about to show up at your San Antonio home with a pipe wrench.
The real issue is that data centers powering AI need plumbers, HVAC technicians, and electricians. Those are the same people you call when your water heater breaks, or your A/C quits during a Texas summer.
Your Leaky Faucet Has Competition
AI needs huge buildings filled with computers. Those computers get hot and need cooling systems, water lines, and skilled workers to keep everything running.
And these jobs often pay more than regular plumbing and HVAC work.
According to a February 2026 study by payroll company Gusto:
Plumbers and pipefitters earned about 20% more in areas with lots of data centers.
HVAC jobs grew 41% faster in those areas.
Workers across seven skilled trades earned about 7% more per month.
Gusto studied payroll records from more than 400,000 businesses. The study found a connection but did not prove data centers caused the higher wages.
In July 2026, Indeed reported that data-center job postings had more than doubled in two years. About one in four openings involved installing or maintaining equipment.
These are national numbers, but they could point to a growing problem for San Antonio homeowners.

Good News for Workers. Bad News for Homeowners?
Higher pay is great for skilled workers. It also gives young people another reason to enter the trades.
But there’s a downside for homeowners.
The experienced technician who has spent 20 years fixing A/C systems might leave for a higher-paying job at a data center.
That means the next technician at your front door may have far less experience.
It could also mean longer wait times and higher repair bills as local companies compete to hire and keep good technicians.
When your A/C breaks in August, you want someone who knows what they’re doing.
Stay Ahead of the Emergency
You don’t need to panic. But taking care of your home before something breaks is more important than ever.
Fix small leaks early. Have your A/C checked before summer. Know where your main water shutoff is. And find a service company you trust.
We also need to train more young people to become skilled technicians.
AI may be changing the world, but your toilet still needs someone who knows which end of the wrench to use.
