Art begins where words end. For many of the individuals in Riverside’s Arts Program, creative expression offers a powerful way to share experiences, perspectives and emotions that may be difficult to communicate verbally. The studio environment provides structure, guidance and opportunity, but the stories belong entirely to the artists.

This holiday season, community members will have a chance to experience those stories firsthand. Riverside’s gallery at 1 Cottage Street will welcome visitors on Dec. 5, with open studio hours during the day and extended evening hours as part of Easthampton City Arts December Art Walk. Guests will have an opportunity to explore the studio, meet artists and experience a wide range of original work created by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The gallery will also host additional open studio and gallery hours throughout the month. These events give community members an opportunity to experience the artwork firsthand while supporting local artists through the purchase of one-of-a-kind creations. Updates and seasonal hours will be shared through Riverside’s social media channels.

“There’s something special about this time of year,” said Halley Philips, Riverside’s Art Therapist. “Our artists have spent months creating new work and developing their artistic voices, and the holiday season gives them an opportunity to share that creativity with the wider community. Watching visitors connect with the artwork and the artists themselves is incredibly rewarding.”

Participants work across a range of media, including drawing, painting, beading, photography, mixed media and digital design. Each piece reflects a distinct voice. Some artists capture everyday moments with warmth and humor. Others explore themes of identity, memory, movement or imagination. The work is expressive, authentic and deeply individualized.

One of the program’s greatest strengths is its emphasis on process rather than perfection. Artists are encouraged to experiment, try unfamiliar techniques, and discover personal styles. The act of creating becomes just as meaningful as the finished work. Along the way, participants strengthen fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, self-confidence and emotional regulation – all through the lens of creativity.

The impact of the program extends beyond the studio walls. Riverside artists regularly share their work with the public through exhibitions, gallery events and opportunities to sell their creations. Seeing their artwork displayed in a professional setting and appreciated by community members reinforces a sense of accomplishment and recognition.

Art has the power to build bridges between people who may not otherwise meet. When someone pauses to admire a painting, photograph or handmade piece, they are invited into another person’s perspective.

When you look at a piece created in the Riverside Arts Program, you’re seeing more than color and form. You’re seeing confidence. You’re seeing connection. Most importantly, you’re seeing a story told exactly the way the artist intended.

Riverside’s website features artist profiles that offer a deeper look at the people behind the artwork, their creative processes and the unique perspectives they bring to the studio. Learn more at rsi.org/riverside-arts-program.
