Before the Year Ends, Take a Look at Your Vision Benefits

November has a funny way of sneaking up on us.

One minute we’re watching football and enjoying the first cool mornings of fall, and the next we’re making Thanksgiving plans, buying Christmas gifts and wondering how another year went by so quickly.

But before the calendar flips to January, there’s something else worth checking: your vision benefits.

Many vision insurance plans and employer benefit programs operate on an annual cycle. Depending on your specific plan, benefits for eye exams, glasses, contact lenses or other eligible expenses may reset at the end of the year. Flexible Spending Account funds may also have year-end rules or deadlines that are worth reviewing.

In other words, benefits you’ve already earned may be sitting there waiting to be used.

And November is a much better time to think about them than December 29.

An Eye Exam Is About More Than Reading the Chart

It’s easy to think, “I can still see pretty well, so I’m probably fine.”

But a comprehensive eye examination tells us much more than whether you need a stronger pair of glasses.

Your eyes can give us important information about your overall eye health, and routine examinations allow us to watch for changes that may not be obvious to you yet. Conditions affecting the optic nerve, retina or other structures of the eye can sometimes develop without dramatic early symptoms.

That makes regular eye care less about fixing a problem after you notice it and more about staying ahead of one.

What Have You Been Putting Off?

Maybe your glasses are scratched.

Maybe you’ve noticed yourself holding your phone a little farther away.

Maybe your contacts aren’t as comfortable as they used to be. Maybe driving at night has become more difficult, your eyes stay irritated or dry, or it has simply been longer than you’d like to admit since your last examination.

Those little things have a way of becoming “normal” because they happen gradually.

November is a great time to stop and ask: Am I seeing as well as I could be?

And if your insurance or benefit plan provides coverage toward an exam, glasses or contacts, this may be the perfect opportunity to find out.

Check Now, Not During the Holiday Rush

Take a few minutes this month to look at your vision insurance, FSA or other benefits and see what is available to you. Every plan is different, so check your specific coverage and deadlines.

Then, if you’re due for an exam or have been putting off new glasses or contacts, take care of it before the year disappears underneath the wrapping paper.

At Box Eye Care, our goal isn’t simply to help you read the smallest line on an eye chart. It’s to help protect your vision and keep you seeing clearly for the moments that matter.

And with Thanksgiving tables, Christmas lights and plenty of familiar faces coming into view over the next several weeks, November is a pretty good time to make sure you’re seeing all of it clearly.
