Beyond the Price Tag: Choosing the Right Insurance

As we push towards the end of the year, everything starts to tighten up. The leaves fall, your clothes get more layered, and your wallet starts to feel a little lighter because of the holidays approaching.

Insurance sometimes feels like one of those things you “just have to pay for” but just because you are getting coverage, doesn’t mean it is the right kind of coverage. Making sure you and your family, especially around the holidays with nonstop travel, are covered properly is one of the most important future planning things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.

Just like all of us these days, we are pretty price driven in our decision making but with insurance what a lot of people don’t factor in is the kind of company you are throwing your hat in with.

There are many different insurance companies out there, more and more every day it seems, but it is important to look a little deeper past the price tag before committing to having your assets and the things most important to you covered by that company.

I get it, most of the time you have to go where the rates are best, that is the name of the game around here but like I always recommend to anyone thinking about shopping around, look for the claims reputation of that company before committing. There are plenty of detailed accounts online of people’s experiences with various companies and how their claims went. Of course, there will always be those who didn’t get quite what they thought they should have but the overall tone of the experiences is what you should be looking for.

If you have two companies you are looking to compare between, make sure you are factoring in the potential for there to be a claim. If company A has a rate $100 more total than company B, but company B has an awful claims reputation, how much is a smooth experience worth to you? Would you rather go with a carrier that will work with you and understand the issues you are having or would you rather go with the carrier that just wants you to pay your premiums and get you off the phone?

If you don’t choose the right company to cover you, you may end up paying more than you would have if you had just chosen the right company from the start. Lacking coverage can cause things to delay during claims or even worse, you end up with not enough coverage and then you are having to come out of pocket for thousands of dollars for an accident you thought would be covered.

As the end of the year approaches and we all start to slow down a bit, now is the perfect time to look over the coverages and company you are with and see if that aligns with where you feel most comfortable.
