Countertop Myths: True or False?

  • Copied!

After years of working with countertops, I’ve learned something: there are a LOT of countertop “facts” out there that aren’t actually facts.

I hear them from clients all the time; “But I thought quartz could handle anything!” or “Wait… quartz and quartzite aren’t the same thing?”

And honestly, I get it. With so many materials, finishes, colors and opinions online, choosing a countertop can get confusing fast.

So, let’s have a little fun.

Grab a pen (or just keep score in your head!) and see how well you know your countertops.

True or False?

1. Quartz is completely heat-proof.

FALSE!

Quartz is durable and a great option for busy homes, but it isn’t heat-proof. The material contains resins that can be affected by extreme heat. That hot pan coming straight from the stove? Give it a trivet!

2. Natural stone should look exactly like the sample you saw.

FALSE!

And that’s actually one of my favorite things about natural stone! Granite, marble and quartzite are created by nature, so colors, veins and patterns can vary from slab to slab. A tiny sample can give you an idea, but whenever possible, go see your actual slab. Sometimes the slab you fall in love with is the one you never expected.

3. Seams can be completely invisible.

FALSE!

I wish I could say yes to this one! A skilled fabricator can make seams clean and discreet, but depending on your kitchen layout, slab size and material, a seam may be necessary, and it may still be slightly visible.

4. Quartz and quartzite are basically the same thing.

VERY FALSE!

The names may be confusing, but these are two completely different materials. Quartz is engineered, while quartzite is natural stone. They have different characteristics, maintenance needs and performance considerations. So if someone tells you they’re the same… now you know better!

5. The prettiest stone is always the best choice.

FALSE! (Sorry!)

This might be the hardest one because I also fall in love with beautiful slabs.  But before choosing, think about your real life. Do you cook every day? Have kids? Want almost zero maintenance? Are you okay with a natural stone developing character over time?

Your countertop needs to fit your life, not just your Pinterest board.

So… how did you do? 5/5?

If you missed a few, don’t worry, that’s exactly why people like me spend our days talking about stone!

Choosing countertops should be one of the fun parts of your project. Ask questions, touch the materials, look at the full slabs and learn what you’re buying.

Because the best countertop isn’t simply the one that looks beautiful on installation day.

It’s the one you’ll still love living with years later.
