Creating a Home for the Life You Love

What if, before deciding what to do with your home, you stopped and asked a completely different question: What do I want my life to look like now? Not five or ten years ago. Not what made sense when the kids were little, when you were building your career, or when your family needed something different. Now. What do you want your mornings to feel like? Who do you want gathered around your table? Do you want more connection—or more quiet? More room to entertain, or less to maintain? A place to garden, create, work, travel from, welcome grandchildren into, or simply breathe?

We often make decisions about our homes backwards. We start with the house—its value, square footage, interest rate, or what needs updating—and then try to fit our lives inside it. But I believe the better place to begin is with the life. Once you know how you want to live, you can begin asking whether your home supports it.

Here’s a simple exercise I often encourage: walk through your home as though you’re seeing it for the first time. Notice what you actually use, what you avoid, where people naturally gather, and which spaces no longer serve a purpose. Then consider the bigger picture: your monthly costs, maintenance, location, accessibility and the amount of time and energy your home requires. A home can be financially valuable and still be costing you something in the way you want to live.

And here’s the beautiful part: the answer isn’t always moving. Sometimes a home simply needs to be reimagined. A room can have an entirely new purpose. A forgotten backyard can become the place everyone gathers. Sometimes simplifying creates freedom. Sometimes adding space creates connection. And yes, sometimes the home that served one chapter beautifully has done its job—and there’s another one waiting for the next.

There isn’t one right answer. But there is tremendous value in asking the question. So, here’s my invitation: take a few minutes and dream a little. If you could design this next season of your life—not just your house—what would it look like?

And if you’d like someone to dream with you, I’d genuinely love to hear your answer. Some of my favorite conversations begin exactly this way—not with buying or selling, but with listening, asking good questions, and exploring what’s possible. Because creating a home you love begins with something even bigger: Creating a life you’ll love coming home to.
