As temperatures drop and winter weather approaches, a little preparation can go a long way toward protecting your home, vehicles, and family. Here are a few simple steps to consider before the cold weather arrives.

Protect Your Home & Outbuildings

  • Trim tree branches: Remove limbs hanging over your home, garage, sheds, and other outbuildings. Ice, snow and strong winds can cause branches to break and damage roofs, siding, and vehicles.
  • Clean your gutters: Clear leaves and debris so water can drain properly and reduce the risk of leaks and ice-related damage.
  • Prepare for freezing temperatures: Protect exposed pipes, disconnect outdoor hoses, and winterize sprinkler systems and outdoor faucets.
  • Check your roof: Look for loose or damaged shingles and address problems before snow and ice arrive.
  • Inspect outbuildings: Check barns, sheds, and garages for loose roofing, damaged doors and exposed wiring.
  • Prepare for power outages: Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, and other emergency supplies readily available.

Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

  • Watch for deer: Deer are more active during the fall months, particularly around dawn and dusk. Consider installing deer whistlesand remain especially alert in areas where deer are common.
  • Check your tires: Make sure your tires have adequate tread and proper air pressure. Good tires are especially important on wet, icy, and snowy roads.
  • Maintain visibility: Replace worn windshield wipers, keep washer fluid topped off, and make sure headlights and taillights are clean and working properly.
  • Check your vehicle’s battery: Cold temperatures can put additional strain on an aging battery.
  • Keep an emergency kit: Consider carrying blankets, a flashlight, phone charger, water, snacks and basic emergency supplies.
  • Slow down: Allow extra stopping distance and adjust your speed for road and weather conditions.

Fall is also a great time to review your home and auto insurance coverage. Make sure your policies reflect your current vehicles, property, belongings, and any recent improvements or purchases.

A few minutes of preparation today can help you avoid costly surprises tomorrow. Stay safe, stay prepared, and enjoy the season!
