Finding Peace of Mind: What to Look for in Quality Childcare

I still remember the ache in my heart the day I dropped off my oldest child for her first day of preschool. As I walked out of the building, a thought echoed in my mind: “How can I leave my precious child in the care of strangers?”

Years later—after trying several childcare options and now working within the childcare industry—I’ve gained a new perspective on what truly matters when choosing an early childhood school.  Whether you’re a first-time parent or seeking a change, here are some key things to look for when evaluating an early childcare center.

  1. Get to Know the Leadership Team

The management sets the tone for the entire school. Their philosophy and priorities shape the environment your child will experience every day.

Ask questions such as:

  • What is the school’s leadership philosophy and top priorities?
  • How do they support and invest in their teachers?
  • How often can parents expect communication and updates?
  1. Observe Classroom Interactions

Spend time watching how teachers engage with the children—it reveals the heart of the school’s culture.

Look for:

  • Teachers who connect at the child’s level, using calm, encouraging tones.
  • Children who are laughing, engaged, and comfortable.
  • Classrooms that are arranged for safety, visibility, play and learning
  1. Understand the Curriculum and Daily Routine

A strong curriculum supports not just academic skills, but emotional and social growth too. When reviewing the program, consider:

  • Is the curriculum accredited?
  • How much hands-on learning is included compared to paper-based activities?
  • Are the toys and materials aligned with the learning goals?
  • Is there a healthy balance of structured learning, self-guided play, and free play?

Choosing an early childhood education center is one of the most meaningful, and emotional, decisions a parent can make. Before making your final choice, take a moment to listen to your instincts. If a school checks all the boxes but something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s okay to cross it off your list. But if a school gives you a genuine sense of comfort and positivity, it deserves a spot on your shortlist.

I invite you to include Children’s Lighthouse of Seabrook among the schools you visit. As a parent, I know that the first drop-off can tug at your heartstrings—but knowing you’ve chosen a nurturing, well-led, and engaging environment brings real peace of mind and helps your child flourish from the very first day.
