5 Signs Your Florida Home May Need Better Insulation
In Florida, your attic can become one of the hottest areas of your home. That heat doesn’t necessarily stay upstairs. When insulation is inadequate, deteriorated or poorly installed, it can make it harder for your home to maintain comfortable temperatures—and may cause your air-conditioning system to work harder.
So how do you know if your attic insulation is doing its job?
1. SOME ROOMS ARE ALWAYS HOTTER
If certain bedrooms or areas of your home never seem to cool down as well as the rest of the house, your insulation and air sealing could be part of the problem. Uneven temperatures can indicate that conditioned air is escaping or that heat is entering through areas with insufficient insulation.
2. YOUR ENERGY BILLS SEEM HIGH
Your utility bill depends on many factors, but inefficient insulation can contribute to increased cooling demands. A well-insulated and properly air-sealed home helps slow the transfer of heat between the attic and living space.
3. YOUR HVAC SYSTEM RUNS CONSTANTLY
If your air conditioner seems to run and run—especially during Florida’s hottest months—it may be fighting more than the outdoor temperature. Heat entering through the attic, combined with air leakage, can make it difficult for your system to keep up.
4. YOUR INSULATION LOOKS OLD OR UNEVEN
Take a look in your attic. Do you see thin areas, gaps, compressed insulation or sections that appear disturbed? Insulation doesn’t necessarily remain equally effective forever, particularly after remodeling, repairs or other work has disturbed it.
5. YOUR HOME FEELS HUMID
Insulation isn’t a substitute for proper moisture control, but unwanted air movement can contribute to comfort and humidity problems. In Florida’s hot, humid climate, controlling the movement of outside air into the home is an important part of creating a more comfortable indoor environment.
SO, WHAT CAN BE DONE?
Depending on the home’s construction and existing insulation, solutions may include adding fiberglass insulation, improving air sealing or installing spray foam insulation.
Spray foam is particularly useful because it can expand into gaps and irregular spaces while creating an air barrier. Both open-cell and closed-cell spray foam have specific applications, so the right solution depends on the home and the area being insulated. If you suspect your attic is working against your home’s comfort, don’t simply add more insulation and hope for the best. Have the space evaluated first.
A professional insulation contractor can identify areas where insulation is inadequate, determine where air is escaping and recommend the appropriate solution for your home.
For Florida homeowners, the goal isn’t simply more insulation—it’s a better-performing home.
Knowles Spray Foam, LLC has been serving Brevard County for more than 15 years, providing spray foam and fiberglass insulation solutions for residential and commercial properties.
If your home is difficult to cool, unevenly comfortable or simply doesn’t feel as efficient as it should, it may be time to look above the ceiling.
