Changes take effect January 1, 2027
Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7. This is your opportunity to review your current coverage and make changes for the coming year. Even if you are satisfied with your plan, taking time to review your options can help you avoid unexpected costs and ensure your coverage continues to meet your needs.
Frequently asked questions:
Do I have to do anything during Open Enrollment?
No. If your current plan is still being offered and you are happy with your coverage, you generally do not need to take any action. Your enrollment will typically continue automatically.
However, Medicare plans can change each year. Monthly premiums, prescription drug formularies, pharmacy arrangements, provider networks and out-of-pocket costs may all be different. Reviewing your plan’s Annual Notice of Change and comparing available options can help you determine whether your current coverage remains the best fit.
What can I change during the Annual Open Enrollment Period?
Between October 15 and December 7, you can make several changes to your Medicare coverage, including:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan.
- Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare.
- Change from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another.
- Join, drop or change a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
Any changes made during this period generally take effect January 1 of the following year. If you are considering a return to Original Medicare, remember to review your prescription drug coverage and whether you need a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy. Depending on your circumstances and state rules, you may not be able to obtain Medigap coverage without medical underwriting.
What are the Part D changes for 2027?
For 2027, the standard Medicare Part D deductible is scheduled to increase to $700, while the annual out-of-pocket spending cap is scheduled to rise to $2,400.
These amounts can affect what you pay for prescription medications throughout the year. Your actual costs will depend on your plan, the medications you take and your coverage arrangements. Reviewing your drug plan is especially important if you take multiple prescriptions or have experienced changes in medication costs.
MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION
Medicare coverage is not one-size-fits-all. Comparing premiums, deductibles, prescription coverage, provider networks and total anticipated costs can help you choose a plan that meets your health care needs and budget.
Remember, the deadline to make changes during Annual Open Enrollment is December 7. Reviewing your options before the deadline gives you time to ask questions and make an informed decision about your coverage for the coming year.
