Personal Training: On a Scale of Solitary ⟷ Social

While one doesn’t have to join a gym to exercise regularly, there are numerous advantages. Many would-be exercisers find motivation in being around like-minded souls investing time and effort in physical fitness. Not everyone wants to drain their account or rack up bills to get a weight rack, or invest in an elliptical machine doomed to only be used once or twice a month. Notably, not everyone has enough floor space to support the sturdy equipment that most gyms provide.

While personal trainers, through various apps, can appear on a small screen whenever you choose to log in, sometimes you need a spotter too (a task pixels will never be able to perform). Personal trainers are available for set appointments: making it easier to commit to a routine and stay motivated. They can be your coach, or just a silent partner to keep you safe – they can also help freshen up your old routine.

When looking for a gym and/or a personal trainer, you should ask yourself the question:  “What are my goals?” The question, then, for potential personal trainers should be: “How can you help me do X, Y and Z?” Some other questions might be:

  • Are the facilities clean and well-maintained?
  • Is the equipment adjustable for my height/weight?
  • Are employees available to demonstrate proper & safe usage of everything?
  • Can I get a day pass to test-drive the equipment?
  • Are my trainers appropriately certified?

A good personal trainer will help you optimize physical performance, enhance mobility and build sustainable strength. They can guide precise movement patterns, correct techniques and prevent injury so that you can make consistent, lasting progress.

A personal trainer will make it personal – they’re there to build a strong relationship with you and tailor your workout volume and intensity, so you’re not constantly chasing an unattainable goal.

Most trainers will coach you through sessions, but also educate you towards being more empowered to do it alone… if that is your style.
