The familiar call echoes through the backstage hallway and dressing rooms of The Stage Oconee, signaling the excitement of opening night. While audiences only experience a few hours of entertainment, each production represents months of preparation, collaboration, and dedication.
For twenty years, The Stage Oconee has been an integral part of the Watkinsville and Athens communities, providing quality theatrical experiences while fostering a welcoming community of artists and families. Through performances, rehearsals, classes, and special events, people of all ages have found opportunities to participate in the arts as actors, directors, designers, crew members, and volunteers. Along the way, lifelong friendships have formed, valuable skills have developed, and countless memories have been created.
Our story began in 2006, following the end of Athens’ beloved Singing Christmas Tree. A small group of varying ages gathered in Rocket Hall Gymnasium to rehearse All on a Christmas Day, a faith-based Christmas musical. This labor of love became the foundation of a new holiday tradition. Originally known as Cornerstone Productions and later Brightstone Productions, the theatre spent its first few years producing Christmas musicals before growing beyond anything we could have imagined.

Over two decades, two name changes and a venue relocation, we expanded from one December production to eight shows and numerous summer camps each year. With that growth came new performers, volunteers, and audience members, all united by a shared love of the arts.
Confidence. Connection. Creativity.
In a world where people can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, a community theatre provides a safe place to gather in person, participate in shared experiences, and celebrate local talent. At The Stage Oconee, all ages work together to bring stories to life. Younger performers learn from experienced artists, while adults rediscover the joy of creating. These collaborations foster meaningful, multigenerational friendships and create a welcoming environment where everyone can feel at home.
One of our greatest contributions has been our impact on younger generations. Theatre builds confidence, encourages teamwork, and develops responsibility. Many of our current creative team members, administrators, and adult performers began in our youth programs. Watching them grow from young participants into mentors and leaders is a powerful reminder of theatre’s lasting influence as well as the value in the skills learned through the arts.

Community theatre also gives locals the opportunity to tell their own stories. Performers may be neighbors, teachers, students, parents, or retirees, making each production a reflection of the community it serves. Community theatres thrive because people believe in them. Every ticket purchased, volunteer hour donated, sponsorship provided, and round of applause helps sustain our mission.
As The Stage Oconee looks toward the future, our greatest achievement may not be any single production, but the community we have built around a stage in a former hay barn in Watkinsville, Georgia. Connected through creativity, friendship, and shared memories, we remain committed to nurturing the artistry and growth of everyone who walks through our doors.
Every person has a story to tell, and there is no better place to begin the next chapter than with The Stage Oconee.
