As the holiday season approaches, family gatherings, festive meals and colder weather are on the way. A little planning can help protect your eyes from common injuries and irritation.

Be Careful in the Kitchen

Holiday cooking can expose your eyes to hot grease, steam and other irritants. Stand back when frying foods, open hot lids away from your face, and wash your hands before touching your eyes, especially after handling spices.

Protect Your Eyes Outdoors

Cold air and indoor heating can leave eyes feeling dry or irritated. Sunglasses are also important during winter because UV rays can reach your eyes on cloudy days and reflect off snow.
As we move into December, decorations and holiday gifts can bring additional eye safety concerns.

Decorate with Care

Tree branches, ornaments, and hooks can scratch the eye. Use a sturdy ladder when hanging decorations and keep sharp or breakable items away from young children.

Choose Toys Carefully

Check the recommended age range when buying toys for children. Toys that shoot darts or other objects can cause serious eye injuries. When giving sports equipment, consider adding protective eyewear.

Changes in our routines and environment during the holidays can affect our eyes in ways we may not expect. Indoor heating and cold winter air can contribute to dry, irritated eyes, while holiday activities may increase the risk of injury. Staying aware of potential hazards, using artificial tears when needed, and wearing proper eye protection can help keep your eyes comfortable and safe. If you experience ongoing irritation, pain, redness, or vision changes, contact your eye doctor.
