A strong academic foundation is an important part of preparing for college, but today’s students need more than excellent grades and test scores. They need opportunities to discover what interests them, develop practical skills, and demonstrate they have pursued those interests with purpose.
That vision inspired the introduction of five new Signature Programs at The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn., beginning with the 2026–27 academic year. Open to students via a thorough application process, these programs include concentrations in Aviation, Computer Science/ Interactive Media, Health and Human Performance, Leadership, and W.I.L.D., which stands for Wilderness Instruction and Leadership Development.
Each program builds upon the strengths of Webb’s existing college-preparatory curriculum while allowing students to explore fields in which many of the School’s alumni have also found success. Instead of waiting until college to begin considering their interests or career paths, Webb students can gain meaningful experience, confidence, and perspective long before graduating high school.
Learning Through Experience
Webb students do not simply study these subjects; they embrace them.
Although each Signature Program offers a distinct focus, all five emphasize purposeful exploration, mentorship, and applied learning, as students immerse themselves in their chosen field. student interested in aviation may accrue actual flight hours and work toward earning their private pilot’s license by age 17, another student in the Computer Science Interactive Media program might develop a digital solution to a real-world problem and help others. Students who complete the requirements of a Signature Program at The Webb School must also produce and present a culminating Capstone project demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and experience they have gained.

Developing Skills That Last
But the value of these programs extends far beyond learning a Signature Program distinction on their high school transcript.
Through authentic challenges and guidance from experienced professionals, students learn to apply academic knowledge in meaningful ways. They strengthen critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Perhaps just as importantly, they gain confidence.
When young people have opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and see the results of their work, they begin to understand what they are truly capable of. That confidence and perspective will serve them well in college, in their careers, and throughout life.
These experiences also provide Webb’s students with something that has become increasingly important in the college admissions process: an authentic story.
Colleges and universities desire students who demonstrate curiosity, initiative, commitment, and a willingness to pursue their interests in meaningful ways. Rather than simply adding another co-curricular activity to their college application or résumé, completing a Signature Program offers the chance to demonstrate these same qualities but with sustained engagement.

Personalized College Planning
Through an exclusive partnership with Blue Ivy Coaching in Tennessee, Webb provides personalized and flexible college counseling for students in grades nine through 12.
The journey begins with individual online meetings focused on career orientation and major exploration, and continues throughout the college application process, as students receive an average of more than 40 hours of personalized coaching from their strategically assigned Blue Ivy counselor. Together with Blue Ivy students and their families research universities, explore potential majors, create activity lists, brainstorm essay topics, and identify opportunities such as internships, Governor’s School, passion projects, and mentorship programs featuring Webb alumni.
Unlike in traditional college counseling settings, Webb students can schedule meetings with their Blue Ivy coach after school or on weekends to stay organized and on track.
Establishing this relationship as early as the ninth grade allows students to plan appropriately for the college application process. Along with selecting the right extracurricular activities, it gives them time to develop their interests and ensures they take the advanced courses needed for their intended college major.
Beyond building an intriguing résumé, Blue Ivy reminds each student to stay open-minded throughout the college search process, helps them identify what genuinely interests them, and guides them to explore those passions deeply.
Telling an Authentic Story
Whether writing an essay, preparing for an interview, or discussing their academic interests, students who complete a Signature Program have meaningful experiences to share.
“Over time, we expect the most compelling stories to come directly from our students—from the first app developed, the first solo flight or aviation milestone, the first student-designed performance program, the first wilderness leadership experience, or the first initiative created by a student that makes a meaningful difference in the community,” said Webb’s 14th Head of School, Dr. Polly Parker.
And, thanks to Blue Ivy Coaching, students can learn to thoughtfully communicate what they have explored, express how they have grown, and demonstrate where that experience may lead them now that they are college-ready.

Preparing Students for the Future
“These programs have been intentionally designed to evolve alongside the world our students will enter,” adds Dr. Parker.
While many of the careers today’s students will eventually pursue may look very different from the careers we know now, Webb remains at the forefront of ensuring its graduates become adaptable thinkers, confident communicators, creative problem-solvers, and thoughtful leaders who can tackle just about anything.
Families can support this growth by encouraging students to explore, ask questions, try something unfamiliar, and take thoughtful risks. Part of the educational experience is discovering what excites them, what challenges them, and where their talents and interests intersect.
That is ultimately the vision behind Webb’s Signature Programs: helping students discover what interests them, develop the courage and skills to pursue it, and leave Webb prepared to thrive in college, career, and life.
