Treating tooth decay does not always require a drill and filling. In our office, we have started using a peptide to help remineralize weakened enamel in a process called guided enamel regeneration. For the right candidate, Curodont by vVARDIS offers a promising way to remineralize a tooth before a larger cavity develops.
Curodont uses a self-assembling peptide called P11-4. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids—the building blocks of proteins. This peptide enters the porous area of an early decay lesion and forms a microscopic framework that supports mineral deposition. Calcium and phosphate from our own saliva can build onto this framework, helping restore minerals within weakened enamel. This process is called remineralization.
The greatest benefit is the opportunity to preserve natural tooth structure. Clinical trials have found that using P11-4 with fluoride can improve remineralization and help stop early decay compared with using fluoride alone. These findings support its use as an option for treating carefully selected early lesions.

Who is a good candidate? Curodont is best suited to early, non-cavitated decay—areas where minerals have been lost but the tooth surface remains intact. Some of these areas appear as chalky white spots. A dentist must evaluate the lesion’s depth via radiographs and surface condition to determine whether this approach is appropriate. Curodont does not replace missing tooth structure or eliminate the need for fillings when decay extends beyond the enamel, into the next layer of the tooth.
Using AI, we can monitor the treated area with xrays to check whether decay has stopped and whether further care is needed. For someone with suitable early decay, Curodont can be a valuable alternative to drilling and filling. By addressing damage early and supporting remineralization, it offers a conservative approach that may help keep more of the natural tooth intact.
