Shade Without Sacrificing the View

Continued from the September issue of Highlands Living.

Exterior solar fabrics are available in a variety of openness factors. 1% is the tightest weave giving stronger sun/glare control but not much visibility. 10% is a more open weave that gives much better visibility but does not provide as much sun/glare control. Most lake front property home owners choose 3% or 5% to get the best of both.

Disadvantages of solar shades on Florida windows

  • Less nighttime privacy – people outside may be able to see in if interior lights are on
  • Potential maintenance – dirt, pollen, and insects can accumulate on the fabric requiring periodic cleaning
  • Upfront cost – typically higher due to more durable components
  • Motor/electrical considerations – Motorization may eventually need servicing, hardwired systems require electrical planning
  • Not a substitute for impact protection – does not replace the need for impact-rated windows, shutters, or other hurricane protection

To summarize, the biggest trade-off in Florida is:

Best for sun / heat / glare control + daytime privacy + preserved view + everyday outdoor comfort

Versus

Less nighttime privacy + maintenance + wind exposure + higher cost

If your main goal is keeping a Florida home cooler, exterior solar shades can still be an excellent choice. The biggest mistake is choosing a fabric solely based on appearance rather than its openness factor, solar/UV performance, wind rating, and warranty.
