Solo Travelers and Travel Vendors both have frustrations with this. A lot of the time the price is 175% or double when you want to room alone. Yes, there are options, find someone you travel well with and share a room/cabin. Let’s look at this though from both sides. If a cruise ship had pricing and availability and offered all cabins at let’s say a 125% rate, we might not have cruise ships any longer. When ships sail full, they are breaking even. Most of their profit will come from the casinos and alcohol sales/packages. Some will have a handful of solo cabins they offer and once they are sold then it does go back to the 200% rate. This can also be difficult when traveling with a solo group as they only have so many. Resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico oftentimes have limited rooms for singles or a minimum of two in a room.
What are the other options?
There are some months where there are sales where a single supplement has been waived. River Cruise groups will have a limit as to how many they can offer when this waiver is offered. Cruise lines have it as well and usually let their travel agent partners know when they have a sale vs putting it out to the public. Then there is the option of finding a travel buddy or two. When choosing this option. I suggest interviewing each other, even if you are currently friends. If you like it quiet when you go to bed, then don’t room with someone who has to have the TV on. You may have allergies to perfumes/sprays, make sure you discuss this prior to agreeing to share a room. I have a list that I give my clients. How to find a roommate if you don’t know anyone? If you have a travel advisor ask them to keep you in mind if anyone may need a roommate. You can ask friends if they know anyone who may want to go on the trip who might be going alone and need a roommate. Just be sure to interview each other to make sure it is a good fit!
Solo group cruises and trips
There are some River Cruises, Ocean Cruises and All incl Resorts that do have rates/sales for solos plus some solo cabins just for one person. Keep in touch with your Travel Advisor not only for a possible roommate, but if you want your own cabin, for a good rate that is not 175% or more. I work with quite a few solo travelers and some want to be part of a group and some will travel on their own. So no matter what I’ll always keep an eye out for those good solo rates! Keep an eye out for my presentation Nov 23rd, 2026. This will be for everyone, but bringing in a cruise vendor who has single cabins available!
Happy Travels!
