Imagine two families purchasing identical homes. Same floor plan, same square footage, same architectural details. Now imagine each family working with the same interior designer.
The finished homes could look entirely different. And that’s exactly how it should be.
We all live differently. Our routines, priorities, families and the ways we use our spaces are uniquely our own. What works beautifully for one household may not work at all for another.
When I first meet with clients, one of my favorite questions to ask is, “What isn’t working?”
It’s often much easier to tell someone what frustrates you about your home than to describe exactly what you want instead. Maybe it’s a kitchen that never seems to have enough counter space, a room that no one uses, or a beautiful piece of furniture that simply doesn’t fit the way your family lives.
Those conversations tell me far more than a collection of inspiration photographs ever could.
Don’t get me wrong, I love beautiful inspiration. But a photograph captures a moment, not the life happening around it. Just because a particular layout or design works beautifully in someone else’s home doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for yours.
That’s where thoughtful interior design comes in.
Good design considers the things you see, certainly, but also the things you experience every day. How you move through your home. Where you naturally gather. The lighting at different times of day. The materials you touch. The storage you need. Even the spaces where you simply want a little quiet.
And while those decisions may seem small individually, together they create something much more meaningful than a beautiful room.
They create a home that feels like you.
Ultimately, I think that’s what most of us are searching for. Not a home that looks like someone else’s, or one that feels too precious to actually live in.
Just a place where you walk through the door, take a deep breath, and feel completely at home.
