Every fall, patients come into our office with the same concerns: new brown spots and uneven skin tone. Even with diligent sun protection, a Monmouth County summer of beach days and time on the water can take a toll. Fall and winter, when the UV Index is lower, are the ideal seasons to repair this sun damage.

At home, a consistent routine with proven ingredients such as vitamin C and retinol can fade brown spots and brighten skin. For stubborn pigment, prescription-strength lightening agents such as hydroquinone and kojic acid can further help. Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day, even in fall and winter, is also extremely important.

In the office, chemical peels and laser treatments are among the most effective tools for reversing sun damage. Broad band light (BBL) and intense pulsed light (IPL) lasers are some of the most used devices that target brown spots. Beyond their cosmetic benefits, certain resurfacing lasers and medium-depth peels have also been shown to reduce precancerous spots and lower the risk of certain skin cancers.

Together, a consistent skincare routine and carefully chosen in-office treatments can undo much of what summer left behind.
