Some places become part of a community so gradually that you hardly notice it happening.
A familiar face behind the checkout. The neighbour you run into while picking up milk. A quick coffee and conversation. The birthday cake you forgot to order until the last minute. The ingredients for Sunday dinner, or the flowers you bring home just because.
For 25 years, Thrifty Foods Tsawwassen has been part of those everyday moments.
On November 14, the store will celebrate its 25th anniversary in Tsawwassen with a day designed to bring people together, including radio, prizes, a barbecue, cake and coffee, and gingerbread decorating for the kids.
It feels fitting that the celebration is centred around gathering. After all, a neighbourhood grocery store is about more than groceries. It is one of those places where the rhythms of a community naturally play out.
Over the past 25 years, Thrifty Foods Tsawwassen has also been a familiar supporter of organizations and initiatives throughout South Delta. The store has helped local groups connect with residents, raise funds and shine a light on causes that matter close to home.
In recent years, that has included support for organizations such as the South Delta Food Bank, REACH Child and Youth Development Society and OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, along with local events and youth programs. Sometimes that support looks like a fundraiser or barbecue, sometimes it is a donation or sponsorship. Each one is a small way of helping local organizations do what they do best.
There is also a longer history of helping neighbours that dates back to the early years of the store. Tsawwassen was the first Thrifty Foods location in the Lower Mainland to offer Sendial, the grocery shopping and delivery program that connects volunteers with customers who are unable to shop independently.
It is a small example of something that can make a meaningful difference in everyday life: making it a little easier for people to access the things they need and feel supported along the way.
And perhaps that is what makes 25 years worth celebrating. Not simply the number of years a store has been open, but all the ordinary moments contained within them.
There have been family dinners and holiday meals, school lunches and summer barbecues, birthday celebrations and those last-minute trips for something forgotten. Children who once came through the doors holding their parents’ hands have grown up and returned with families of their own.
Over time, it becomes a familiar and reliable place where people know they’ll recognize a friendly face.
For Thrifty Foods Tsawwassen, November 14 is an opportunity to celebrate the people who have made the past 25 years possible: customers, employees, volunteers, local organizations and neighbours.
There will be cake, coffee, a barbecue and plenty for the kids to enjoy. But beneath the celebration is something even simpler: gratitude for 25 years of being part of Tsawwassen’s everyday life.
And after a quarter century, that is something worth celebrating together.
