One of the privileges of living in Northeast Georgia is that you don’t have to go looking for reminders of what it means to be rooted. They are everywhere.
Drive almost any mountain road and you’ll see trees growing in places that seem impossible. Some are enormous. Others are twisted, weathered and scarred from years of storms. Yet somehow, they remain standing.
Recently, I spent several weeks talking with our church family about being rooted—about growing deep in a world that often encourages us to live on the surface. The idea has stayed with me.
We tend to notice what is visible. We admire the height of a tree, the shape of its branches and the beauty of its leaves. But none of those things tell us the whole story. The real work is happening underground. Roots are hidden. They are quiet. They take time. And they determine how well a tree will stand when the wind comes.
I think people are much the same.
It is possible to look like everything is fine while our roots are shallow. We can be busy, successful and surrounded by people, yet still feel unsteady. We can spend enormous energy cultivating what others see while giving very little attention to what is happening within us. But storms have a way of exposing the depth of our roots.
A tree doesn’t grow deep roots in the middle of a hurricane. It develops them slowly—through ordinary days, changing seasons, rain, drought and time.
So do we.

For me, being rooted means anchoring my life in Christ, making room for God’s Word and prayer, and surrounding myself with people who help me become the person God created me to be. It means discovering that faith isn’t simply something we do on Sunday. It is what holds us steady on Monday morning.
Maybe you’ve been looking for something deeper. Maybe life has left you feeling a little unsteady. Or maybe you’re simply curious about what it means to build your life on something that lasts.
If that’s you, I’d love to invite you to take a step.
Come join us at Church of the Mountains on a Sunday morning. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to know all the answers. Just come as you are.
We meet at 10:30 am.
Come find your roots.
Because the goal isn’t simply to survive the storms of life.
It’s to become the kind of person who can stand when they come.
