You Thought the Summer Heat was Hard on You? It was Hard on Your Car Too!

Anyone who spent an August afternoon in Canyon Lake knows how hard Southern California summer heat can be. But while you’re enjoying November’s cooler temperatures, remember that your vehicle just spent months dealing with that heat, too.

High temperatures can take a toll on several important components, and some of that wear may not become obvious until weeks or even months later.

How’s your battery? Many people associate dead batteries with cold weather, but summer heat can be particularly damaging. High temperatures can accelerate internal deterioration and shorten battery life. Having your battery tested can help identify a weakening battery before the morning your car won’t start.

Don’t overlook your brakes. Squealing, grinding, vibration when braking or a change in how the brake pedal feels can all be signs that your brakes need attention. If something doesn’t feel or sound right, have it checked before heading out on a long drive.

Take a look at your tires, too. Hot pavement and high temperatures can contribute to tire wear, while the transition to cooler weather can affect tire pressure. Check inflation, tread depth and overall tire condition.

And don’t forget about fluids and routine maintenance. Engine oil and other automotive fluids help lubricate, cool and protect critical components. If you’ve put off scheduled maintenance during a busy summer, fall is a good time to get caught up.

Most importantly, pay attention to changes in your vehicle. New noises, warning lights, leaks, vibrations or changes in performance are often your car’s way of telling you something needs attention.

At Advanced Auto Care, we believe preventive maintenance is almost always preferable to an unexpected repair. After everything your car did to get you through another Canyon Lake summer, November is a great time to return the favor—and make sure it’s ready for the road ahead.
