Why November Is a Good Time to Have Your HVAC System Checked

By November, most of us in DeLand are finally giving our air conditioners a little bit of a break. After running hard through another long Florida summer, this is a good time to see how your HVAC system held up.

At Jacob Heating & Air Conditioning, we’ve been serving families in West Volusia since 1921. Over the years, we’ve seen that many expensive HVAC repairs don’t happen overnight. They often start as small issues that could have been caught earlier with routine maintenance.

One of the first things to think about is your electric bill. Did it seem unusually high this summer? Higher temperatures naturally mean more energy use, but an HVAC system that is struggling may run longer and work harder than it should. Dirty coils, restricted airflow, duct leaks, and worn components can all affect efficiency and increase energy use.

Pay attention to the humidity in your home, too. Your air conditioner does more than cool your house, it also removes moisture from the air while it runs. During the milder fall months, your A/C may not run as often, so you may notice indoor humidity increase somewhat. However, if your home consistently feels unusually damp or clammy, it’s worth having the system checked to make sure it is operating and controlling humidity properly.

Also, think about anything that may have changed over the summer. Is the system louder than it used to be? Does one room feel warmer than the others? Is the unit turning on and off more frequently? These things don’t necessarily mean you’re headed for a major repair, but they’re worth mentioning to your HVAC technician.

And before we get our first real cold snap, turn on the heat. Let it run for a little while and make sure everything is operating properly. In Florida, it’s easy to forget about the heating side of the system until we actually need it. It’s much better to discover a problem on a mild November day than on the first cold morning of the season.

The age of your equipment is another important consideration. Many manufacturers and industry sources commonly place typical residential system life expectancy somewhere in the range of roughly 10–15 years, depending on the equipment, maintenance, installation, usage, and operating conditions. If your system is approaching that age, it doesn’t automatically mean it needs to be replaced, but it does make regular maintenance and paying attention to changes in performance even more important.

November is simply a good time to give your HVAC system some attention. The weather is milder, your equipment has just finished its hardest stretch of the year, and there’s still time to address small concerns before the holidays and colder weather arrive.

A good HVAC company should be able to tell you what needs attention, what can wait, and what doesn’t need to be touched at all.

After all, sometimes the best repair is the one you catch before it becomes an emergency.
