Don’t Worry, Be Happy with Assisted Living Locators
There is a song by Bobby McFerrin titled “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. I was thinking about this song and about the lyrics and wondering what is the key to being happy? Part of the lyrics to this song says “In every life we have some trouble, but when you worry you make it double. Don’t worry, be happy, don’t worry, be happy now.” As I looked into what does it look like as a senior adult to be happy? I don’t think that any of us live worry-free lives. We all have concerns to deal with. However, there is a certain mindset many senior adults who are mostly always happy have. What I found as I dug into this is that we all need social interaction and engagement. Isolation is isolating to put it simply and can lead to depression.
What habits do happy people have? First, they are very engaged in life. The other common thing that I found was having something that they are passionate about. I would encourage you to find something you are passionate about. This can be really anything: helping others through volunteer work, gardening, exercising, group exercise, art classes, book clubs, church groups, even online groups. I think that having something you are passionate about that also helps you engage in the community with others is a winning situation. This can also help you develop lasting long-term relationships with other like-minded people.
If you are not sure where to start, I suggest talking to someone at your local library. Let them know what your interests are and they can help you find local group activities that involve your interests. Visit local senior centers around town. Senior centers have many activities going on and can also tell you about other locations that have opportunities to be engaged. Trying new things can broaden your circle of friends and help keep you mentally sharp. So go out there and embrace happiness and don’t let your worries double “don’t worry, be happy”.
