Why Insurance Matters Before You Start Renovating

Back to Articles

Home renovations can transform a living space, increase comfort and boost property value, but they can also change your insurance needs. Whether you’re upgrading a kitchen, finishing a basement, or adding a new room, it’s important to understand how these improvements affect your homeowners insurance.

REVIEW YOUR REPLACEMENT-COST COVERAGE

Homeowners insurance is designed to protect your property based on its current replacement cost, or the amount it would take to rebuild your home as it stands today. When you make upgrades or additions, that replacement cost often increases. If your policy limits aren’t adjusted to reflect the new value, your insurance might not fully cover the cost to rebuild or repair after the loss.

For example, if you add a $75,000 kitchen remodel but never adjust your policy, you could face significant out-of-pocket expenses after a covered loss, such as a fire or severe storm. Updating your coverage ensures your investment is fully protected.

NOTIFY YOUR PROVIDER ABOUT RENOVATIONS

Home renovations are exciting, but they also come with new responsibilities. Therefore, be sure to notify your insurance provider about any updates, and be prepared to share documentation (if requested) showing the cost and scope of the improvements. Your agent can review your policy limits, confirm that your replacement value is accurate, and make any necessary adjustments. A quick check-in now can prevent major headaches later.
