Think Before You Dink: Staying Injury-Free on the Pickleball Court

  • Copied!

Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in Bucks County — and for good reason. It’s social, strategic and accessible across generations. On any given day, local courts are filled with neighbors enjoying competitive rallies and post-match conversation.

While pickleball may appear gentle, the quick lateral movements, sudden lunges and repetitive overhead strokes can quietly stress the body.

Most pickleball-related issues aren’t dramatic injuries. They tend to develop gradually through repetitive strain, including:

  • Calf and hamstring strains from explosive starts
  • Ankle sprains during quick directional changes
  • Knee irritation, particularly in those with underlying arthritis
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff strain from repeated overhead shots
  • “Tennis elbow” and wrist overuse
  • Achilles tendon tightness or inflammation

Longevity in sport comes down to preparation and smart load management. A brief dynamic warm-up improves muscle elasticity and joint mobility. Strength training for the glutes, calves, core and shoulder stabilizers enhances lateral control and power. Proper court footwear — designed for side-to-side stability — reduces unnecessary joint stress.

Pace yourself by gradually increasing intensity — especially if you’re new to the sport or returning after a break. Use proper full-body technique and listen to your body by resting and addressing any persistent pain.

You should consider seeing a professional if you experience pain that lasts more than one to two weeks. Swelling, instability or weakness in the affected area are also signs that you may need medical evaluation. Additionally, sudden sharp pain should not be ignored, as it could signal a more significant injury requiring prompt treatment.

At Advanced Spine and Sports Medicine, our integrated health model includes chiropractic care, physical therapy and a board-certified sports medicine physician in one location, allowing seamless collaboration and communication. Our approach includes advanced diagnostics, rehabilitation planning and treatment and medical interventions when appropriate.

So, think before you dink — by preparing properly and addressing small issues early, you can help ensure the game remains part of your lifestyle for decades.
