I can’t believe this month marks my 45th year in the pool industry. So much has changed, not only with pools but with Doylestown. Does anyone remember these fun places—Doylestown Lanes, Ed’s Diner, Foster’s Toy Store on South Main? How about Phillip Arthur’s ice cream parlor, Woolworth’s Five and Dime, or Herb’s Hobby Shop?

I started working after school while attending Lenape Junior High School. I would work two to three jobs and then get dropped off at home. It seems like yesterday—too bad our bodies don’t feel that way.

After 10 years, I left Pennsylvania to expand my knowledge of the industry. I started in Arizona and learned quite a bit. I then moved to Florida and worked with a swimming pool builder in Jacksonville. In 2012, I got a fantastic phone call from my first employer. He was going to retire and wanted me to come back and take over the company. We packed and moved back within two months.

When I started, swimming pools were basic—a concrete swimming hole with a simple sand filter and pump. As time went on, manufacturers and engineers introduced new equipment such as chemical automation, remote controls and robotic cleaners. Today, you can get colored lighting, phone control and salt chlorine generation. The most important improvements have been in safety equipment and regulations. This industry truly cares about the safety of you and your family.
