The answer is in most cases a great big YES! Pets are members of the family and are very welcome at most senior living communities. There are some rules and guidelines of course. Typically, small dogs or cats are welcome. However, if someone has a larger pet they may be allowed in some independent living communities. Keep in mind that in assisted living the care services are for the residents, not for the pet. If mobility declines and the pet becomes a tripping hazard, then other arrangements may have to be made. Caregivers are not allowed to take care of pets. The residents must be able to care for the pet independently. There is normally a one-time pet deposit, and some places will also charge a monthly pet fee. Pets really do bring a lot of comfort and can help ease the transition and make your new place feel more like home. Pets are not allowed in memory care. Pets can also visit residents if a current copy of shot records is provided annually. Some senior communities will also allow pet therapy to come in to visit residents.
