In every gangster movie ever made, there will inevitably be this line, “It’s not personal, it’s just business”. I couldn’t disagree more. Especially because in the movie, after the line is delivered, something incredibly violent happens to someone and it is indeed very personal every single time!
I believe that business is very personal. Every time I go out on a job, I am putting myself out there for a review. I am inside of somebody’s home, amongst their things. I assess the problem, give an estimate, just like everyone else does. But during the whole time that I’m there, you the= customer are deciding how you feel about me. A lot of times it’s similar to a blind date. We have our introduction, we have small talk, I meet your pets. It’s a whole experience.
Throughout this whole interaction, you are sizing me up. Deciding if I am trustworthy, whether I know what I’m talking about. I am asking/answering questions and we are both getting to know each other in a very short time.
This is a very important step in the process of doing business. You need to feel comfortable with me and I need to feel comfortable with you.
Luckily for me, I enjoy meeting people. I don’t have to put on an act or get myself pumped up for an interaction. I don’t have to sell anything, I’m here to fix a problem and that makes me feel good about what I do.
I don’t know how to make my business not personal. I wouldn’t want to do business with someone who doesn’t think it is personal. Robo calls, junk mail, spam emails and texts. These are not personal. I don’t know a single person who likes any of these things. In fact, I know that most of you out there despise them. I do. People I don’t know, taking up my time, to try to sell me things that I don’t need. No thanks.
If predatory marketing is your thing, then I’m not the guy for you. I answer the call, show up on time, wipe my feet and get to work figuring out what the specific solution to your water problem is. If that’s what you’re looking for, I’m happy to offer my help.
I take my business very personally.
