5 Tips to Get Through the Holidays Without Gaining Weight
The holidays are a special time—family gatherings, office parties, delicious food everywhere you turn. But for many people over 40, this season can also bring weight gain, achy joints, and an energy crash that carries into the new year.
The good news? You don’t need to miss out on the fun to feel great. With a few simple strategies, you can enjoy the holidays AND maintain your health, strength, and confidence.
Here are my top 5 tips to get through the holidays with zero weight gain:
1. Keep Your Routine Non-Negotiable
December gets busy—travel, guests, kids at home. But movement should still be a priority. Even if you can’t make every workout, stick to a minimum baseline:
- 2–3 strength training sessions per week
- 20–30 minutes of purposeful movement on the other day
Think of fitness like brushing your teeth. You don’t skip for a month just because things get busy.
2. Strength Train Before Big Meals
This is one of the simplest and most effective holiday hacks.
A quick workout—bodyweight squats, pushups, rows, or a session at the gym—before that holiday dinner increases your insulin sensitivity, meaning your body uses the extra calories to build muscle instead of storing them as fat.
3. Follow the “Protein + Produce First” Rule
Holiday spreads are typically loaded with sugar and refined carbs. Enjoy them—but in the proper order.
Start every meal with:
- A protein source (turkey, ham, eggs, fish, lean beef)
- A serving of veggies or fruit
Doing this:
- Keeps you fuller
- Prevents over-indulging
- Supports muscle and metabolism
You’ll still enjoy dessert—you’ll just enjoy a smaller portion naturally.
4. Don’t Drink Your Calories
Eggnog, cider, cocktails… Liquid calories add up fast. If you’re going to drink, here’s a smart strategy:
- Alternate each alcoholic drink with water
- Skip the sugary mixers when possible
- Save the high-calorie beverages for the events that truly matter
Remember: enjoyment doesn’t come from excess—it comes from being intentional.
5. Mind the Leftovers
- A single holiday meal won’t derail you. Eating like it’s Christmas for 10 days straight will.
- Send leftover desserts home with guests. Store high-calorie foods in the freezer instead of leaving them on the counter. Go back to normal eating the very next day.
- Indulge for the moment—not the month.
