Travel Ideas for South Carolina Seniors this Coming Spring
It may be February, but Spring is just around the corner. One lovely thing about South Carolina is that winters are short. Another thing that I really love about South Carolina is that we are hours away from the coast or the mountains. A day trip to any number of destinations is doable. Of course, I always prefer to make a weekend of any trip and have a little get away if I can. Some ideas for short South Carolina trips are below:
Lowcountry & Other Coastal Areas
Myrtle Beach/North Myrtle Beach: there is something for everyone in Myrtle/North Myrtle Beach. You can take advantage of reduced rates for the season and enjoy golf, shopping, wonderful seafood & the beach is beautiful year-round. We usually go to some of the outlet malls to stock up on things we need or just to browse. Barefoot Landing is a popular place to visit as well as some of the nearby dinner shows (must be booked in advance). The aquarium in Myrtle Beach is also very nice.
Pawleys Island is another one of my favorite places to visit. It has a laid-back vibe. I love the Hammock Shops. If you have never been, make sure to check them out. Also, nearby is another place that is a must to visit, Brookgreen Gardens.
Charleston is another popular spot. I am not as familiar with the Charleston area, but they do have the downtown market shops that I have been to many times. They also have many culinary experiences for visitors. I will say that some of the freshest and best seafood I ever had was in Charleston. Also, nearby is Patriot’s Point which has a Naval Museum. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens are another popular destination. I have also heard that the aquarium in Charleston is very nice.
The Upstate & Mountain Area
Greenville is a wonderful place to visit anytime. Start out your visit to Falls Park on The Reedy followed by lunch and explore the downtown area.
Chimney Rock is another place that has wonderful views that are a short walk away. Explore the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains or explore Revolutionary War Battlefields along the way. There are many things to see from pristine lakes to waterfalls.
Other Areas
There are forty-seven state parks across the state for you to explore. I have often thought it would be fun to visit each one. We also have one National Park – Congaree National Park which is an accessible boardwalk trail through the forest.
Tips for traveling as a senior or with a senior:
If wheelchair accessibility is needed, many times that information can be found online. Make sure to take any mobility assistance that is needed.
Go during off peak times/days whenever you can. This will make your journey more enjoyable, and you will not have to deal with a large crowd.
Check out local town museums. Many times, these can be a treasure trove of information. I once found a photo of a great Uncle of mine in a small local museum. Museums are also great for rainy or chilly days.
Allow time for rest by not packing your schedule too full. Also, make stops along the way and make sure to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
