Things to consider for your landscape as the Spring season is around the corner…….

Early spring is a critical transition period for managed landscapes. Physiological activity is beginning below ground while most plant material remains dormant above ground. Work performed during this window directly affects plant vigor, turf density, pest pressure, and soil function for the remainder of the growing season. Effective spring landscape management prioritizes assessment, structural correction, and soil preparation over cosmetic enhancement.

Site Evaluation and Winter Damage Assessment

The first step is a comprehensive site evaluation. Freeze–thaw cycles, snow accumulation, and
deicing materials often cause structural and physiological stress. Inspect trees for cracked limbs, frost splits, and weakened branch unions. Evaluate turf for compaction, crown heaving, and areas of poor drainage. Pay close attention to salt-affected zones adjacent to hardscapes, where osmotic stress and soil sodium buildup can impair root function. Documenting these issues early allows corrective action before active growth resumes.

Debris Removal and Bed Preparation

Spring cleanup should focus on removing material that impedes soil warming or poses disease risk while preserving beneficial organic matter. Remove fallen woody debris, diseased plant material, and dead annuals. Perennial crowns and ornamental grasses should remain intact until consistent soil warming occurs to protect emerging tissue from temperature fluctuations. Turfgrass Management Considerations

Spring turf management should emphasize recovery and weed prevention rather than forcedgrowth. Light raking improves canopy airflow and lifts matted turf. Pre-emergent herbicides should be applied based on soil temperature thresholds rather than calendar dates to effectively control annual weeds such as crabgrass. Avoid aggressive nitrogen inputs and low mowing heights early in the season, both of which weaken root systems and increase summer stress susceptibility.

Mulching and Irrigation System Evaluation

Mulch applications should be delayed until soils have warmed to prevent insulation-related root stagnation. Apply mulch uniformly at 2–3 inches, maintaining clear space around trunks and stems to prevent moisture-related disease. Irrigation systems should be inspected for winter damage, pressure inconsistencies, and coverage efficiency, with controllers adjusted to reflect spring precipitation patterns.
