Preparing Your Gas Fireplace for Next Season

Back to Articles

This was one tough winter, and while spring is a welcome change, now is the best time to prepare your gas fireplace for the next cold spurt. Follow these guidelines to make sure your fireplace is ready to perform when the temperatures drop again:

  • Run your unit occasionally during the off season. This makes sure the unit is functioning as intended and helps remove build up on the pilot orifice. Dust, debris and even spider webs (our eight-legged friends are attracted to the smell of gas) all accumulate over the year. Turning on the pilot briefly removes buildup and eliminates a blockage.
  • Locate your unit manual and keep it accessible. Most have trouble shooting guides in the back pages that can help in a pinch.
  • Familiarize yourself with the backup battery feature of your unit. Many run on a battery system in the case of a power outage. Make sure you know how to use that feature now; it can be hard to locate in the dark.
  • Have your unit serviced by a professional. Fireplace service schedules tend to be packed from September to March. It can be difficult to receive immediate service during this time. Being proactive with service in the spring or summer can ensure that you are ready for the season and won’t have to wait for an appointment.

Taking these small steps during the warmer months ensures that your home remains a sanctuary when the ice returns. Give your fireplace the attention it deserves today, so it can take care of you tomorrow.
