Preparing Your Lawn for Spring Growth: What Homeowners Should Know

Spring is an exciting time for homeowners as landscapes come back to life, but proper preparation is essential for healthy growth throughout the year. One of the most important spring tasks is soil evaluation. Over time, soil becomes compacted, limiting water, air, and nutrients from reaching the grassroots. Aeration helps relieve compaction and creates an environment where grass can thrive. This step alone can dramatically improve lawn density and color.

Spring is also the ideal time to address weeds before they spread. Early-season weed prevention reduces competition for nutrients and sunlight, giving grass a stronger start. Many homeowners wait until weeds are visible, but proactive treatment is far more effective and less disruptive.

Mowing habits matter more than many realize. Cutting grass too short can stress the lawn and encourage weed growth. A good rule of thumb is to never remove more than one-third of the grass height at a time and to keep mower blades sharp to avoid tearing the grass.

Spring cleanups also play a critical role. Removing debris such as leaves, sticks, and dead grass allows sunlight and air to reach the soil surface. This simple step reduces disease risk and encourages even growth.

By focusing on preparation rather than quick fixes, homeowners can enjoy thicker, greener lawns that remain resilient through the challenges of summer.
