Spring Cleaning: Supporting Your Body’s Transition Into a New Season

As late winter softens and the first blossoms of spring begin to appear, we are entering one of the most significant seasonal transitions in the ancient healing system of Chinese Medicine. This shift from winter’s quiet, inward energy to spring’s upward, expansive movement affects not only nature, but our bodies and minds as well. What do you wish to clear out as the past in your environment and within yourself to make room for new inspiration and growth?  

I am Lauren Sugarman and I have been practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) since 2010. I provide an array of services ranging from acupuncture and cupping to nutritional and herbal therapies. I love instructing small groups and offer Qi Gong classes at my office as well as my 5-week online Restart Anti-Inflammatory Program. Each of these modalities works to support the body’s natural rhythms and help patients stay balanced throughout the changing seasons. 

In the Chinese system of the Five Elements, the spring season is correlated with the element of Wood, which governs the Liver and Gallbladder. The Wood element refers to living, growing entities such as trees, plants, and the human body representing growth, renewal, and forward momentum. The color associated with this element is the predominant one of spring – the green of the young plants, symbolizing new beginnings, creativity, and inspiration. Just as the trees begin to bud and push upward towards the light, our Qi (vital energy) naturally begins to rise during this time of year. 

However, after winter’s slower pace, heavier foods, and reduced activity, many people feel sluggish, stiff, foggy, or irritable as spring approaches. In TCM, the Liver organ system is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body. When Liver Qi flows freely, we feel motivated, flexible, emotionally balanced, and clear-minded. When it becomes stagnant, we may experience inflammation, arthritis flare-ups, chronic pain, digestive imbalances, hormonal dysregulation, or increased stress. 

Acupuncture is a powerful way to help the body transition smoothly into spring. By stimulating specific points along the meridians, acupuncture restores the smooth flow of Qi, reduces stagnation, and supports the body’s natural detoxification processes. Many patients notice improved sleep, clearer thinking, reduced pain and inflammation, and a greater sense of emotional ease after seasonal treatments. 

Spring is an ideal time for a gentle, internal “spring cleaning.” In TCM, this means supporting the Liver with nourishing foods, hydration, and movement – no extreme detoxes. Incorporating leafy greens, sprouts, citrus and lighter meals can help clear internal heat and reduce inflammation, benefitting such conditions as arthritis, brain fog, chronic pain, and stress-related symptoms. 

Spring reminds us that change can be graceful. With the right support, we can move forward feeling inspired, balanced, and fully alive.
