The 5 Pillars of Proper Pool Care
A beautiful swimming pool doesn’t happen by accident. Clear, safe, inviting water results from consistent care built on a few non-negotiable fundamentals. Over the years, I’ve found that nearly every pool problem—cloudy water, algae, equipment strain, or chemical frustration—can be traced back to one or more of what I call the five pillars of pool care. Master these, and your pool will reward you all season long.
1. Brushing
Brushing is one of the most overlooked steps in pool maintenance, yet it’s essential. Algae and bacteria love to cling to pool surfaces, especially walls, steps, corners, and behind ladders, where circulation is weakest. Regular brushing breaks up these invisible films, exposing them to sanitizers so they can be eliminated. Think of brushing as preventive maintenance—it stops small problems before they become big ones.
2. Removal of Debris
Leaves, bugs, dirt, and other debris don’t just look bad; they actively harm your water quality. As debris breaks down, it consumes sanitizer and introduces phosphates and organic waste that feed algae. Skimming the surface and vacuuming the pool regularly keeps contaminants from overwhelming your system and reduces stress on your filter. A clean pool is easier—and cheaper—to maintain.
3. Good Circulation
Water that doesn’t move becomes water that causes trouble. Proper circulation ensures that chemicals are evenly distributed and that debris is carried to the filter. Dead spots in a pool can quickly turn into breeding grounds for algae. Running the pump for an adequate amount of time each day and aiming return jets correctly keeps water moving and healthy from top to bottom.
4. Good Filtration
Your filter is the pool’s cleaning engine. Whether you use sand, cartridge, or DE, filtration removes fine particles that brushing and skimming can’t catch. A dirty or undersized filter allows contaminants to stay suspended in the water, leading to dull or cloudy conditions. Routine cleaning and proper maintenance ensure your filter performs efficiently and extends the life of your equipment.
5. Good Water Chemistry: Sanitation and Balance
Chemicals often get all the attention, but they work best only when the first four pillars are solid. Proper sanitation kills bacteria and algae, while balanced water protects swimmers and equipment alike. Maintaining correct pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and sanitizer levels prevents corrosion, scaling, irritation, and costly repairs. Balanced water is safer, clearer, and more comfortable.
When these five pillars work together, pool care becomes simpler and more predictable. Skip one, and problems pile up quickly. Follow them consistently, and you’ll enjoy a pool that’s not only beautiful—but truly well cared for.
