Transforming Spaces: Design in a Day
Throughout my career as an interior designer, I’ve taken on everything from major renovations to luxury home transformations that unfold over several months and require significant budgets.
While those projects are incredibly rewarding, I’ve recently found myself especially drawn to a different kind of transformation — one that happens in just a single day.
This approach centers on spending one intentional day with a homeowner to completely rethink their space using primarily what they already have, complemented by a few carefully sourced additions — often vintage or secondhand pieces. It’s a practical, budget-friendly alternative to traditional design services, and it has been just as fulfilling for my clients as it is for me.
I call this offering the “Designer Pop-Up.” It’s designed for those who want meaningful change but aren’t looking for a full renovation — or the financial commitment that comes with one. Instead of beginning from scratch, the focus is on seeing the home with fresh perspective and using thoughtful styling to unlock its hidden potential.
Reimagining What’s Already There
Every one-day design begins by evaluating the items already in the home. It’s remarkable how many beautiful, high-quality pieces lose their impact simply because they’ve stayed in the same place for too long. Through strategic rearranging, layering, editing, and rebalancing scale, I help clients rediscover what they already own.
One client, Danielle, felt her primary bedroom lacked the calm, elevated feeling she wanted. The space had strong foundational pieces — an upholstered bed, coordinated nightstands, neutral walls — but everything felt pushed outward and slightly disconnected. Artwork placement was off, lighting felt harsh, and the room didn’t reflect the boutique-hotel atmosphere she envisioned.
We began by adjusting the layout, pulling furnishings inward to create cohesion and better flow. Repositioning the rug so it properly framed the bed instantly grounded the space. From there, we layered textiles she already owned in a more intentional way and softened the lighting for a warmer, more relaxing ambiance. The updates were subtle, but the overall shift was dramatic.
The Beauty of “Preloved” Finds
One of my favorite aspects of these one-day transformations is incorporating secondhand décor. I often refer to this as the “preloved” approach — because thoughtful design doesn’t require everything to be brand new.
At first, some homeowners are unsure about adding vintage or previously owned pieces. But these finds often bring authenticity and depth that mass-produced items simply can’t offer. They’re typically well made, environmentally conscious, and far more cost effective.
For Danielle’s bedroom, we sourced a vintage bench for the foot of the bed along with a pair of brass lamps from local resale listings. The bench added both texture and functionality, while the lamps introduced warmth and personality. Those additions gave the room a curated, collected look — without requiring a full furniture overhaul.
What to Expect from a One-Day Design
The experience starts with an in-person consultation. I walk through the home, take measurements, discuss goals, and gain a clear understanding of the homeowner’s vision. I often share inspiration images or preliminary mood concepts to ensure we’re aligned stylistically.
On transformation day, I dedicate several focused hours to rearranging furniture, styling surfaces, hanging artwork, and integrating any sourced pieces. While certain updates — such as painting or custom work — may be completed afterward, I always provide a clear action plan outlining the remaining steps to fully realize the design.
Affordable Design with Lasting Impact
Booking a designer for a day doesn’t mean sacrificing quality. It simply means being intentional with your budget. My one-day design packages typically range from $350 to $999, depending on the size and complexity of the space. The flat rate covers the consultation, hands-on styling, sourcing of vintage items, curated inspiration boards, and practical recommendations. It’s an efficient way to achieve a cohesive, refreshed space without the long timelines or ongoing hourly costs associated with traditional design services.
The Final Reveal
Few moments compare to watching someone step into a room that finally feels balanced and complete. Seeing clients light up when their home feels more functional, more beautiful, and more reflective of who they are is the most rewarding part of my work.
For me, this service is about more than aesthetics. It’s about making quality design attainable. It’s about helping people reconnect with their homes — without demolition, without overwhelm, and without overspending.
