May You Have Better Hearing: Care for Your Hearing During Better Hearing Month

Back to Articles

May is Better Hearing Month

What is Better Hearing Month? For over 75 years, May has been designated as “Better Hearing Month.” This month-long campaign creates an opportunity to publicly highlight the many difficulties those with hearing difficulties face on a daily basis.

What Causes Hearing Loss?

Physicians and researchers cite several contributing factors to hearing loss: heredity, chronic exposure to loud noise, excessive earwax, and certain medications can all affect your ability to hear well.

According to the National Council on Aging, untreated hearing loss has been linked to numerous other health complications, such as arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, depression, anxiety, and even Alzheimer’s and dementia.

How Hearing Technology Can Help Those With Hearing Difficulties

According to a study conducted by Michigan State University, an estimated 28 million people in the United States experience some type of treatable hearing loss, yet less than a quarter of those people use hearing device technology to enhance their hearing.

You or a loved one should get you hearing checked if you are experiencing:

  • Muffled speech sounds
  • Difficulty hearing on the telephone
  • Difficulty hearing people speak in a crowd or noisy environment
  • Trouble understanding the voices of women or children
  • Complaints that you turn the volume of your TV or radio up too loud

By raising awareness, reducing the stigma attached to wearing hearing technology, and supporting one another in our efforts toward achieving better hearing, we can ensure that “Better Hearing and Speech Month” will be a lifetime of better hearing for everyone.
