What Is a Holistic Dentist?

What Is a Holistic Dentist?

When we talk about a holistic dentist, we’re talking about a dental professional who sees the mouth as an integral part of the entire body. This approach goes beyond just teeth and gums; it’s about understanding that the health of the mouth both reflects and influences the health of the entire body.

Connecting the Mouth and the Body

In holistic dentistry, there’s a clear recognition that the mouth is the largest access point into the body. It’s also one of the most vascular areas, meaning substances can enter the bloodstream quickly through the mouth. This is why, for example, a nitroglycerin tablet placed under the tongue works so rapidly to stop a heart attack. Because of this, a trained holistic dentist can often see signs of what’s happening inside the body by examining the mouth.

A Two-Way Relationship: Mouth and Body Health

It’s not just that the mouth can reveal the state of the body; the health of the mouth can also determine the health of the body. In other words, it’s a two-way street: what we observe in the mouth can give us insights into systemic health issues early on, and at the same time, maintaining good oral health can support overall wellness.

Issues like gum disease, for example, can be linked to cardiovascular conditions, and inflammation in the mouth can be a sign of systemic inflammation.

By understanding this two-way relationship, that the mouth is both a reflection of and a gateway to the rest of the body, holistic dentists can offer a truly integrative approach. They focus not just on fixing dental issues, but on supporting the body’s overall health through the health of the mouth.
