At Options Schools, The Senior Institute Capstone is more than a final academic requirement—it is a transformative experience that helps students discover confidence, purpose, and the value of helping others. Designed as a three-part program—Capstone A, B, and C—the course guides students through self-reflection, learning about community service, and ultimately completing a meaningful service project.
A School Designed for Different Paths
Options Schools serves a unique and diverse student population. As an alternative school, it attracts students for many different reasons. Some enroll because they struggled in traditional in-person schools, while others attend to accommodate travel schedules for athletics or other commitments. Many students are academically capable but face challenges such as anxiety that make traditional classroom environments difficult.
Because of this wide range of student experiences, teaching methods often focus more on individual growth than rigid grading standards. Instructors aim to evaluate students based on their abilities and progress rather than a strict academic scale.
Replacing Fear With Confidence
When students first begin Senior Institute, many approach the class with hesitation. Some believe the project will be overwhelming or too difficult to complete. In fact, teachers often find that the biggest challenge is helping students overcome their initial fear of the assignment.
The first step in the class is reassuring students that the experience is meant to be rewarding, not intimidating. Many students begin the course unsure of themselves, but as they progress, they start to realize they are capable of more than they expected. For some, completing the project becomes one of the first major accomplishments they truly feel proud of.
Capstone A: Understanding Yourself
Capstone A focuses on personal reflection. Students read thirteen short lessons known as “habitudes,” which encourage them to think about personal values, discipline, and life goals. After each reading, students respond to questions that connect the ideas to their own lives. Questions may ask them to consider what habits they need to change to reach their goals or where they may lack discipline in their daily lives.
The responses can be powerful. Many students reflect on personal experiences and struggles they have rarely discussed before. While some answers can be difficult to read, the process often helps students better understand themselves. For many, Capstone A becomes a safe place to reflect and express thoughts they might not share elsewhere.
Capstone B: Learning the Power of Nonprofits
In Capstone B, the focus shifts to community impact. Students research nonprofit organizations and learn about the important role they play in helping people and supporting communities. Some students begin the unit without even knowing what a nonprofit organization is, but by the end, many are excited to begin planning their own service project.
Capstone C: Serving the Community
That project takes place in Capstone C. Each student completes a 30-hour service project designed to benefit a nonprofit organization, community group, or people in need. The projects vary widely depending on student interests and community needs.
One student organized a 5K run to collect pet food and supplies for a local animal shelter. Another worked with the American Legion to raise donations and place small American flags on the graves of veterans in his hometown cemetery. Other students have collected clothing for homeless shelters or volunteered their time landscaping at nursing homes.
While the projects differ, the outcome is often the same: a sense of pride and fulfillment. Students not only help others but also experience the powerful realization that they can make a difference.
By the time they finish the Senior Institute Capstone, many students walk away with something more valuable than a completed assignment. They leave with confidence, a sense of accomplishment, and the understanding that they are capable of achieving more than they once believed.
