Summer is almost upon us! With the longer days and outdoor activities, dental injuries are more common. Keep these guidelines handy in the event of a dental emergency.
Knocked Out Permanent Tooth
1. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root.
2. Gently rinse off any dirt or debris with water.
3. Insert the tooth back into the socket, then bite on a towel.
4. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, store it in cold milk.
5. Call the dentist immediately (this emergency is time sensitive).
Knocked Out Baby Tooth
1. Try to locate the tooth (for the tooth fairy).
2. Do NOT reinsert a baby tooth.
3. Bite on a cold, wet towel and call the dentist.
4. Give over-the-counter pain medication (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) as needed.
5. Schedule a follow up visit with the dentist for x-rays.
Chipped Tooth
1. Examine the fractured edge of the tooth, and try to locate the piece.
2. If blood is visible within the fractured edge, call the dentist immediately.
3. If no blood is visible within the fractured edge, call the dentist the next day.
4. Avoid hot and cold foods/drinks, they are more likely to trigger sensitivity.
5. Give over-the-counter pain medication (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) as needed.
Jaw Trauma
1. Check the alignment of teeth (make sure they come together normally).
2. If unable to close normally, contact the dentist immediately.
3. Give OTC pain medication as needed.
4. Ice the area to reduce pain and swelling, and stick to soft foods.
5. Contact the dentist for follow up x-rays.
Dental emergencies can be scary. Make sure you are prepared, and check that your dentist provides emergency after-hours care.
