Winter Weather Damage and Your Home

This year we had a real winter for the first time in years. As I write this, I’m hoping to not get an April Fools Blizzard like 1997!!! I’m just thrilled that my snowblower worked after not using it for two seasons and skipping biannual maintenance.

It’s going to be important if not critical to see what damage this winter has caused to your home and property and to protect, repair or replace damage as soon as possible.

The benefits of checking for and repairing winter weather damage promptly versus waiting are significant:

Preventing Escalation

Small issues like minor roof damage, foundation cracks, or gutter problems can quickly worsen. A tiny roof leak can lead to extensive water damage, mold growth, and structural deterioration if left unaddressed through spring rains. The constant freezing and thawing may have caused peeling paint or seam damage where two pieces of trim come together and if left alone can cause moisture infiltration causing wood rot.

Your home’s foundation and paved driveway should be examined for cracks. Hairline cracks in a foundation can develop naturally over time due to settling. Our driveways took a beating from snow & ice removal. If these cracks aren’t sealed/filled properly your driveway could continue to crumble and crack to a point where repairs can’t be done and replacement is necessary. Your foundation could give way to ground water which isn’t covered by home insurance.

Cost Savings

There’s an adage, “You can pay me now or you can pay me later!” Early repairs are always less expensive than delayed ones. A $200 gutter fix now could prevent thousands in foundation or basement water damage later.

Safety

Winter can compromise structural integrity—weakened tree limbs, damaged roofing, or cracked walkways pose immediate hazards to your family and visitors. Prompt inspection eliminates these risks.

Preventing Secondary Damage

Water intrusion from winter damage can cause mold within 24-48 hours, compromise insulation effectiveness, damage electrical systems, and ruin personal belongings—all preventable with prompt action.

Preserving Home Value

Deferred maintenance compounds over time, affecting your home’s market value and making future sales more difficult. Buyers and inspectors will spot neglected damage.

Insurance Considerations

Home insurance policies require timely damage reporting. Waiting too long may result in claim denials, especially if the insurer determines that neglect worsened the damage. Document and address issues while the cause is clear. If you’re looking to change insurance carriers, it’s almost impossible to change if your home is in any distress or disrepair as there will be some sort of insurance inspection.

Peace of Mind

Knowing your home is sound allows you to enjoy spring and summer without worrying about hidden problems festering behind walls or under shingles.

The general rule: inspect early spring, repair immediately. The cost and effort of proactive maintenance is a fraction of reactive emergency repairs.
