Every year, summer seems to arrive a wee bit earlier than expected. Before we know it, school’s out and it’s time to find new books to keep our kids’ reading level up as we keep them amused on long trips to the lake or on those days that are so hot we need to curl up in the home library with a/c, stories and floor picnics. It can be difficult to find books that are engaging for everyone, but it’s a blessing to spend time building core memories with our kids.
Finding family activities that are both fun and educational can be difficult, but the new Brave series seems to accomplish just that. Each book is set in the vibrant world of Freedom Island and is a stand-alone adventure that sparks imagination, teaches timeless values and builds a character foundation that will not be shaken. At the end, there are missions, family time, challenges and games that are designed to reinforce the lesson in the story. Created for kids ages 4-12, they are bound to help fill some of the summer days with fun!
When I first picked up one of the books in the Brave series, I was completely taken with the incredible artwork, colour and vibrancy that occurred on each page. I started to read Brave as a Lion and was instantly taken with the Mouse family. The children are asking Grandpa Mouse to tell them a story, but not one they have heard over and over; they want to hear about the time Grandpa ran into ferocious cats! Although Grandpa thinks it may be a bit scary, he agrees. The artist does a brilliant job of allowing your imagination to put you in the middle of Teensytown, where many animals live, but the scariest animals there are the cats! As the town becomes more and more frightened, they talk about moving away, but Grandpa Mouse, a young mouse at the time, of course, decides to take action and ask for help from Arthur the Lion. The town thinks he has gone bonkers, but he still sets off in the face of danger to ask for help. What follows is an exciting adventure about facing your fears and the true meaning of bravery.
You can have fun this summer with these unique tales as you spend time engaging in the challenges and games that are featured. House of James has six books in the Brave series. Reading them will be time well spent.
