When homeowners come to me about a bathroom remodel, one of the first things we talk about is working with what you have got. Space and existing plumbing will shape the project, but there is almost always more opportunity than people expect. A favorite move of mine is borrowing a little space from an adjacent closet or room. Even a foot or two can open up a whole new layout and make the bathroom feel completely transformed.
Flooring: Start With a Solid Foundation
Tile is the right choice for bathroom floors, and there are great options at every price point. Ceramic is a budget-friendly starting point, porcelain is more durable and worth the investment if you can stretch the budget, and natural tile brings a beautiful, organic look. If heated flooring is an option, I always encourage homeowners to consider it. It is a genuine upgrade to daily life and one of those things people are really glad they did.
Shower Materials: Finding the Right Fit
Tile is my top recommendation for shower surrounds. It is durable, timeless, and gives you endless design flexibility. Pair it with epoxy grout and you have a shower that is much easier to maintain. Epoxy resists moisture and mold and comes in plenty of colors to complement your tile. For those working with a tighter budget, acrylic is a solid alternative at a lower price point. Higher-end acrylic holds up well and looks great. The main thing to stay on top of with acrylic is the caulking. Keep it maintained and it will serve you well for years.
Mirrors and Lighting
Good lighting makes a bigger difference than most people realize. An overhead light positioned above the mirror gives you the best, most even light for getting ready in the morning. Sconces have their place in the bathroom, but for mirror lighting, overhead is the way to go. On the mirror side of things, beveled mirrors have made a real comeback and for good reason. They have a clean, classic look and do a wonderful job of making a space feel more open and bright.
A well-designed bathroom does not have to be complicated or out of reach. With the right materials and a few smart decisions, you can end up with a space that works better, looks better, and adds real value to your home. At 4 Seasons Construction, we love helping homeowners figure out what is possible and making it happen. If you are thinking about a remodel, we are always happy to sit down and talk through the options with you.
