In the quite suburb known as Friendswood, TX, where community spirit runs as deep as family roots, homes become more than four walls, they are living tributes to the parents who hold everything together.  As Mother’s Day and Father’s Day approach every spring and summer, interior design steps into the spotlight, transforming everyday spaces into heartfelt celebrations of love, resilience and gratitude. Thoughtful updates create serene retreats for moms, functional havens for dads, and flexible family zones that handle the whirlwind of active kids. Your home creates environments where appreciation last beyond a single holiday.

No one embodies this blend of design and devotion better than local interior designer, Jody Cornelius of Rhea Dean Design, a Friendswood based firm known for crafting warm, practical homes, tailored to busy families. A pillar of the community, Jody juggles a thriving career with managing being a mother to two energetic children, Sophie (16) and Dylan (7).  Jody is an active member of Love Here Friendswood, a nonprofit that inspires mothers and children to serve their neighbors together.  Jody and her daughter, Sophie, are also extremely active in the National Charity League Greater Friendswood TX, where they participate in hands on philanthropy and community leadership.

Her 16-year-old daughter Sophie lights up the stage in her school theater productions and often fills the house with scripts, costumes and rehearsal energy late into the night. Her seven-year-old son, Dylan is uber athletic!  Jody and her husband, Dustin, spend hours of their days dashing between baseball, basketball and football fields.  This schedule never slows down. “Some days it feels like I’m running a small circus,” Jody laughs.  “But design is my secret weapon for balance.  A well-planned home doesn’t just look beautiful, it supports that chaos so we can actually enjoy the moments that matter.”

Jody’s own home and client projects perfectly illustrate how interior design integrates with Mother’s Day and Father’s day.  She approaches every job with the same question: How can this space honor the parents who give so much while making room the family’s real life rhythms?

Mom’s personal Sanctuary

Mother’s day is the perfect excuse to carve out a peaceful corner just for you!  Jody often transforms a quiet nook in the master suite or a spare bedroom into a spa like retreat.  Picture a plush armchair draped in a soft blanket, surrounded by layered books and gentle ambient lighting. “Moms like me are always on the go,” Jody explains.  “A serene spot to sip coffee or unwind after a charity even feels like the ultimate gift.” Custom built ins hide everyday clutter, while meaningful art, perhaps a gallery wall of family photos add soul without adding stress. For Mother’s Day bring your special mom fresh flowers and a new cozy blanket to turn her day into a relaxing oasis.

Let’s not forget about the Dad’s, Father’s get their due with functional, masculine spaces that double as home offices, man caves or game day retreats. For families like Jody’s, where sports rule the calendar, she knows how important this space can be for a family.   “Dustin coaches, works and shows up for every performance,” Jody notes. “Giving him a stylish spot to recharge honors that dedication year-round, not just on Father’s Day.”

Pictured is a Star War’s themed man cave, Jody designed for a Dad who wanted a place to unwind and enjoy his extensive collection.

Family rooms built for real life, Jody’s mantra.  The magic happens in shared spaces that flex with the family’s passions.  Jody designs multi-functional great rooms with hidden storage for basketballs and theater props.  Don’t forget about the performance fabric that laugh at spills and cleat marks.  Neutral palettes with pops of color keep personality and classic design in check. “Our homes tell our stories,” Jody says. “When design supports the sports gear, the charity projects and the late-night rehearsals, everyday feels like a quiet celebration of Mom and Dad.”

Through her work, Jody Cornelius, proves that interior design isn’t a luxury, it’s an act of love. In Friendswood homes filled with laughter, sports, theater, and the quiet satisfaction of giving back, these thoughtfully designed spaces turn ordinary days into lasting tributes. This Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, consider how a few intentional updates can honor the parents who make it all possible, creating a home where gratitude lives every single day.
