Awww, spring! A time for renewal, crazy weather, newness, and dogs wanting OUT! But you need to be cautious! Dogs have been cooped up all winter and just want to get out, explore, and stretch their legs. Just be aware of weather changes when getting out, dress accordingly, and remember to dress your dog accordingly too! Spring can have chilly mornings and warmer afternoons, so if you start your dog out with a sweater, be aware you may need to remove it later on to prevent overheating.
Also, if heading out on the trails, bring plenty of water and snacks, and be sure your pup is protected with a vet-approved tick prevention. Spring is the time of year when all things bud, bugs come back, flowers start blooming, birds return to the trees, and critters are out and about. Any dog that has prey drive may just dart quickly for a chase, so ALWAYS take in your surroundings and keep an eye out. No one wants an injury or a dog to run away and get loose.
Spring also brings out more people, kids, bicycles, and other dogs. Make sure you know your dog well and train as needed for these types of attractions. Did you know many plants can be toxic to your dog? Make sure he or she does not EAT or chew any grass or plants you don’t know. Many people are also putting out pesticides on their flowers and lawns. Steer clear and be safe! No one wants a nice day to turn into a trip to the vet!
Rivers and lakes can also be enticing to your dog, but know that temperatures of the water can still be quite cold, and you don’t want your dog to go into shock. Also, many rivers can rise quickly and run very fast. Never allow your dog in the water without a long lead, to be sure your dog doesn’t get swept away!
Spring can also be a time of year when local fairs, festivals, and outdoor activities begin. Be sure, if you are bringing your dog to any event, that the events ARE pet-friendly, you clean up after your dog, and that they are familiar with crowds and noise and can behave around food smells and other dogs. People can get distracted while at these events, so always, always, always keep an eye on your dog. Also, as temperatures can change quickly in spring, never, EVER leave your dog in a car unattended!!
Spring is a wonderful time of year for your dog! Fresh air, long walks, and new and old friends to visit and play, play, play! Get them out! They will enjoy it, and it is also THE best way to get exercise and release energy to keep them happy and healthy!! Just take it slow and steady. We, as well as your dog, need to ease into a routine. Too much, too fast can cause injury. Take breaks, and yes, you can stop and smell the roses!!
